Subject: Rush setlists?
A few days ago someone (I forget who) suggested The Camera Eye as the
perfect Rush show opener. I was listening to this the other day and
I can see it in my minds eye - darkness for the opening chords, with
stabs of light triggered by Neil's bass drum, and then a full blaze
of colour as the tempo changes.
This is a good beginning, but what about the rest of this idealised
Rush show? Suppose the lads were to do the much-mooted anniversary tour,
playing no new songs but showcasing a lot of old stuff. What setlist
would we like to see? My selection, with comments, would be:-
The Camera Eye (see above)
The Spirit Of Radio
Subdivisions
Animate
Nobody's Hero
Dreamline
Bastille Day
Circumstances
Afterimage
Different Strings (Five songs that have never been played
Losing It (live, and thus would only appear if
Presto (technically feasible. If not, use
Open Secrets (Ghost Of A Chance, The Trees, Anthem,
Neurotica (The Big Money, and The Enemy Within instead.
Instrumental medley:
YYZ (
Where's My Thing? (
Leave That Thing Alone ( bits of these songs only,
Drum Solo ( I suppose.
La Villa Strangiato (
Tom Sawyer (has to be played, really)
(*** encore break ***)
Long-song medley:
Cygnus X-1 (
Hemispheres (
By-Tor & the Snow-Dog ( again, only bits and pieces
Natural Science ( of these songs
2112 (
Closer To The Heart (wasted in the middle of the set)
The length of the set would depend on the amount of each component song
that appeared in the two medleys. Anyway, that's my dream. Anyone
got any other ideas on this subject? Could this be a thread coming on?

Subject: "Grue"
Hello, everyone.
I wanted to throw in this post to let all of you aesthetically starved
music aficionados know about a band in California called "Grue". Grue is
a trio which is primarily instrumental, and vocals are in choice spots
with thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics, much like the Jacob's
Ladder's of Rush songs. The music is complex and dynamic, yet quite
involving, and it's got that nice 'edge' that bands like Rush and King
Crimson are responsible for in music today.
If anybody is interested in band information, mailing list, show
places and dates, etc, drop me a line at 'bnm@qad.com' and I'd be glad
to give you the run-down.
Thanks for reading.

O.K. I have a proposition here. I know we all hate polls and silly
questions and the like, but I propose a NMS poll just for us fans. The
point being, to get to know each other a little bit better, have a little
fun, and see what our collective view is of RUSH.
**PLEASE** send your responses to me and _NOT_ to the NMS! This
will keep the list from getting cluttered. I' leave this open for say,
around two weeks or so and then compile the results and post them
back to the NMS. Please limit your responses to one or two for
each question. Enjoy!

I just purchased a 2-tape video documentary on Buddy Rich
called Jazz Legends; Buddy Rich, and "guess who" was one
of the drummers giving a little commentary on the greatness
of Buddy. I highly recommend these tapes for you drum-heads
out there.
Also, there has been discussion about whether or not the boys
ever played 2112 in its entirety on tour. The answer is most
assuredly yes, they did. Listen to the King Biscuit Flower Hour
recordings from the early 80's, the Oracle is there, full power!

Subject: More Rush Names...
Greetings All,
Just adding my AUS$0.02 worth on the naming of offspring after
Rush members...
Before we had kids, I had always joked to my wife that I would name
them after favourite band members.
Buck - (Buck Dharma, BOC)
Cy - (Cy Curnin, The Fixx)
Kate - (Kate Bush)
Seth - (Set Justman, J Geils Band) and , of course Alex after you
know who. Anyway, prior to the birth of our first son, a formal ballot of
names had Alex at No 1. At this stage my wife had completely forgotten
about the existence of the premier guitarist, and I didn't remind her of
it until he was about 2!! So Alex Benjamin Avery he is..
I myself also used the pseudonym Alex Paul Lifeson during my
university days. At that stage (Early 80's in Australia) the government
would give an allowance to students to cover the cost of living/studying.
I had taken a part time job, and to save my gov't allowance being cut off
on account of having extra income, I posed as Alex Lifeson. I got a big
thrill about seeing the name on the paycheck each week. Alex Paul Lifeson
had earnt AUS$40 for parking cars!!!!
One last thing...
If the fans in the UK can whine about only seeing Rush every
couple of years, we here DownUnder are entitled to a major major bitch
session!!
Take Care Out There

Subject: R'n'R Hall of Fame/Goofy Concert Memories
Regarding the odds of Rush being inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of
Fame, I wouldn't be surprised if they do get overlooked. A band isn't
qualified for induction until 25 years after the release of their first
recording. After doing a little thinking, I realized that Yes, Jethro Tull,
ELP, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson haven't yet been inducted, even though
they're qualified by now. Also, they didn't induct Frank Zappa until after
his death, which was four years after being qualified. With that in mind, it
seems likely, unfortunately, that Rush may be given the shaft. We'll have to
wait and see in 1999, when the Boys are qualified for induction.
Now, about goofy/comical concert memories...When I saw them on the Presto
tour, Geddy and Neil tagged "Wipeout" at the end of "In the Mood," with Alex
acting like he was on a surfboard. The second time I saw them on the RTB
tour, Two guys by the side of the stage (presumably roadies) were shooting
arrows at the band. Not real arrows of course, but those "suction-cup"
arrows. Then of course, there were those goofy introduction on the CP tour.
One last thing. the other night (Jul. 22), I saw Queensryche in Hartford
(front row!) AMAZING show! Their drummer, Scott Rockenfield, has a new
haircut and he lookes so much like Neil Peart now. Scary!
Hmmm...Neil playing with Queensryche. Now THAT'S an interesting concept!

Subject: RUSH & CHRISTIANS (my .02 cents worth),
Hmmm, Boy this Born again Christian thread is really catching on. I always
kind of considered me and my wife to be a minority (being Christians & Big
Rush fans). Personally (and we are both very spiritual Christians) we are
very hard core fans of rush and find nothing at all even a little offensive
about any of the lyrical content. We are not bleeding heart liberals - we
are relatively conservative. I have a Bachelors Degree in Bible, and I
used to get so sick and tired of many of the spriritual jerks in college who
just thought I was going to hell in a handbasket for listening to RUSH.
Many of these so called self proclaimed of the righteous (self righteous)
who had absolutely no scholarship to anything they did (especially when it
came to condemming rock music). But then again, neither did the Spanish
Inquisition and many of the other atrosities to humanity that the church took
the lead in during the dark ages. Amazing how history repeats itself. Oh
well........
Ok.... Ok.... gettin carried away here, getting personal, sorry, back to the
subject.
I have a much greater appreciation for RUSH both musically and lyrically than
for any of the Christian musical artists out there. Not Slammin them but,
they are all clones of secular artists and if any of them were even half
(just 1/2) as commited to the musical and artistic process as they are to
their crusades, then maybe, just mabey they might have some music that would
at least be as interesting as RUSH. Gosh, I might even consider spending
money on one of their CD's then. HHHmmm, well maybe, just maybe.
Alright, sorry .... got a little carried away there. Anyway, for me and my
wife, it's gotta be RUSH if we're going to listen to it, and we're at the
conservative end of the Southern Baptist spectrum. Of course, it always
helps if one does their home work before making off base and uneducated
comments about any group being satanic or whatever.

Hi!
I can't seem to get a straight answer on this...
When Neil was using Tama drums, What kind of Tama's were they? Were they the
Imperial star line? I'm most interested in the set that he used for the
Moving pictures album and tour. Were the concert toms that he was using made
by Tama? I never heard of Tama making concert toms. I do know that Tama makes
gong bass drums though. Also, does anybody have The Rock book (don't remember
the correct name) that modern drummer makes? I know there is an article that
Neil wrote on Creating drum solos. Is it worth buying the book? Is it
transcribed somewhere on the Internet?
Thanks alot!

RUSH & RnRHoF
-------------------------------------------
Re: #1116, aadorjan@aol.com talks about Rush's chances of getting
into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame (RnRHoF). I remember trying to
start a thread on this topic about 6-9 months ago (when the last
induction occurred), but, alas, it fell in deaf ears (or blind eyes).
Back then, I suggested that Rush would be nominated sometime after the
year 2000 or so - after all of the obvious, classic acts would be
inducted. Someone wrote back to me and said something about being
elligble 20 years after your their first album release (?) So, I
guess 1994 was the earliest? Hey, its their loss!
Geddy & Frankie Vallie ?
-------------------------------------------
People have always talked about Geddy's voice - you know the comments
"chipmunks on speed", etc. Well, call me nuts, but I think Frankie
Vallie's voice takes MUCH more getting used too! At least Geddy
sings (well, ok, except for the occasional "Ooh, yeah" or
"wraaaauuuuAAAAUUUUGHT" in Anthem, but I digress). Not that we're
talking about the same audience either, but when my wife gives me
shit about listening to Rush, all I have to do is turn on Oldies 98
(she's an oldies fan) and catch one of those Drano-sounding
"baby's" from Frank and I'm reeling!
Classic Rock & Oldies - Perfect together
-------------------------------------------
Am I the only one who thinks that "classic rock" stations like NY's
K-ROCK and Philly's WYSP are TODAY's oldies stations? I mean, I
actually hear the Stones and CCR on these stations AND on actual
oldies stations (when I'm forced to listen one - see prev.
paragraph).
Haven't heard Rush on any oldies station yet - oh, I forgot, they
have Frankie V.

P.S. To those of you who didn't get the "Classic Rock & Oldies -

Subject: Those goofy Rush guys
Rush-a-holics:
A few folks have posted on the boys hamming it up at shows. I have
seen Rush 5 times, ever since Power Windows. Yeah, I know, I got started
"late"...I heard Vital Signs when I was a sophomore in high school ('83 I
think) and I was sold from then on. I am interested in hearing what was the
song or songs that sold everyone on Rush. I guess that would be another
discussion, altogether.
Back to the subject at hand:
Someone threw a glow stick on stage and Alex picked it up and threw it back
into the crowd: Power Windows Tour, Pensacola, FL.
During the medley for 2112/Overture/Temples at the Presto Tour, San Antonio,
TX...Geddy is singing Temples of Syrinx and Alex is goofing off:
Geddy: "...Our great computers,"
Alex: "Big computers, lots of buttons"
Geddy: "Fill the hallowed halls."
Alex: "Just what are hallowed halls, anyway?"
Something else I saw that wasn't goofy but was really cool was in San Antonio
for the Presto Tour. During Neil's drum solo, he broke the head on his snare
(the Slingerland). When it broke, he got up, turned around and kept going on
the electronic side and never missed a beat. When the platform stopped
turning, a dude came up behind him and swapped out the head. If you didn't
see it you would have never known it happened at all. I happened to be
watching through binoculars and saw it all. Damn, those guys are sharp!!!
Sorry for the length of this post.

Subject: A word from another Christian Fan
Hi all,
It's probably been over a year since I've posted to this list,
but since Rush's music is one of the most important things, and my
walk with Christ is by far THE most important thing in my life, I thought
now would be a good time to chime in. I come from a Methodist/Baptist
background and was saved in junior high. I discovered Rush when
I started high school (in the drumline, as I'm sure some others of you
did 8^)).
Almost immediately I became aware of the inherent 'conflicts'.
The rumors of satanic connections. The reputation of the fan base (and
reality of many individual fans) grounded in the drug culture. And, most
significantly, the fundamental differences of philosophy. The first concern
was obviously meritless. The second was not a pervasive characteristic
(although not absent), and had little to do with my enjoyment of this
wonderful music anyway.
The views and philosophies espoused in the music were a more
serious consideration, however. As beautiful, powerful, and graceful as
their music is, do I really want to be listening to what they're saying?
I listened very closely to exactly what the words said (and I still do).
It was clear that there are several points with which I disagree VERY
strongly (I won't make a list, I'm sure you all know them quite well)
instances where I believe they are wrong. Other points that are
presented in the lyrics as incompatible with Christianity are not (I will give
the example of Freewill here - a fundamental aspect of Christianity) -
instances where I believe they are mistaken.
In evaluating this, there are a couple of important aspects to
consider. Their messages are, for the most part, positive. Their songs
show they have a positive outlook on life and they do a very good job of
communicating that. I do believe that promoting atheism is, in fact, a
destructive , not a neutral, thing. However, in most every instance, when
a personal belief is presented in the music, it is presented as just that - a
_personal_ _belief_; 'I believe' this, 'I will choose' that. There is no
compulsion or denouncement of things other than ignorance, hatred,
intolerance, etc.
Lastly, if I were to eliminate all things from my life that were not
tainted by sin, nothing would be left. I can't keep throwing the baby out
with the bath water. I listen to Rush's music for its transcendent beauty,
and its positive, life-affirming messages on most issues (I imagine almost
all the most important ones for non-Christians). I am compelled to think
critically about everything I see and hear in the world (including my own
Faith), not blindly following anything or anyone, in order to have a more
perfect walk with Christ. This I do with Rush's music, which actually has
strengthened my Faith for a number of reasons, including the fact that the
intelligence and thoughtfulness of the works demands very active and
critical consideration.
I apologize for the length of my message, but these are issues
about which I feel very strongly. Thanks for your attention.
Yours in Christ,
Breese Quinn

Hi ho,
Long time no post. Let's see...must be at least six months since I last came out
from under my pile of work to post. But just reading the NMS has kept me going.
Thanks!
Must agree with DRFULLER@ualr.edu (Dino) that Rush did indeed play 2112 in it's
complete form,(unless my 32 year old brain has gone the way of the dinosaur). My
first Rush gig was April 8,1979 at the Providence Civic Center. The "Tour of the
Hemispheres". 2112 was complete with waterfall sound sample and all. But the
greatest moment of all (for me) was when they played Hemispheres. This IMHO(of
course) is the most incredible song ever written. So you may well imagine how it
felt to be at the CP shows in Hartford and Providence last year! I nearly fell
off my seat in Hartford, as the seats were up to the side, but did stand through
all of Prelude.(Much to the dislike of two fans behind me,sorry ;-} ) A week
later in Providence I had to stand because I was in section 3 row B directly in
front of Alex.(No problem!) I was next to a guy with a NMS tee shirt,if you are
out there anywhere a fine hello and how are you!!
As far as the religious idea goes, I was born and raised a Catholic but have
converted to the Baptist faith.(For reasons which will remain my own and the
obvious reason as not to start a flame war). My feeling is that if you feel that
listening to a certain kind of music is wrong for you, don't listen. To each
his/her own.
Thanks for listening and best to all.

Subject: Born Again Rush Fans
I felt compelled to put my two cents (perhaps more, we'll see) into
the "can a Christian be a Rush Fan." Of course a Christian *can* be
a Rush fan, the more appropriate question is whether, according to
the tenets of the Christian faith, it is *proper* for a Christian to
be a Rush fan. My belief is that it is proper, fine, acceptable,
whatever. Even if you believe in the strict, literal interpretation
of the bible, you must admit that God created man with *Freewill*
I believe God gave us a mind to use, and that use should certainly
involve an appreciation of artistry and intellect. Can you think of a
better combination of artistry and intellect than Rush? And hey,
just 'cause a song lyric says something you don't agree with (doesn't
seem to happen too often w/Rush stuff), doesn't mean you have to adopt
that belief to appreciate the skill that went into crafting the
music. People who tell you that you *can't* listen to things aren't
concerned with your immortal soul, they want to control you while
you're here.
When I hit the pearly gates, I fully expect to hear COS blasting from
the *inside*!

Subject: Re: 07/24/95 - The National Midnight Star #1116
Hi ya'll -- I've been reading TNMS for about 3 weeks now, and this is my
first message! I had a "Rush sighting" on TV last week, and expected to
see it mentioned in here, but no it didn't happen that way, so I will
relate the story myself.
It was during "Late Show w/David Letterman". Dave told a joke saying
that New York courts had deemed it legal to distribute condoms to
children through schools. However--the punchline went--they will not be
allowed to wear them for show and tell!
And so Mr. Paul Schaeffer led the band into a brief brief brief snippet
of -- you guessed it -- "Show Don't Tell".
I barely caught it, myself, and it makes me wonder what other Rush PS
might have used in the course of doing the show...
So, there you have it, a rush sighting from Letterman....now all we need
is for the boyz to actually appear on Late Show! It's strange, because I
can easily imagine them being there and jamming with PS, et al, but I
*know* that it won't happen. :(
Bye kids!

Subject: concert goofiness
On the subject of concert goofiness, here's one from a show at the
Meadowlands that I caught on the Presto tour:
Midway thorugh the set, the Boys have jsut finished a phenomenal
version of Xanadu. Geddy says, "It's pretty hot up here, anyone got any
towels?" On cue, out strut two gorgeous babes in extremelt revealing bunny
costumes (bunnies, Presto, get it?) They towel off Alex and Geddy as the
crowd cheers. Alex says "Hey, what about that guy?" pointing to Neil. Out
stomps this guy who looks like a cross between Lou Grant and Hulk Hogan (I
probably just showed my age with those references!), also in a bunny suit,
smoking a cigar. He tosses a towel to Neil, stomps off.
From the same show, an incredible bit of stage crew excellence.
During the big riff after the solo in Red Barchetta, Alex demolishes a
string. Instantly the guitar comes off and he grabs another one from a
tech running across the stage, you know, like the ball boys in a tennis
match. He's playing agin in under two seconds. It seemed to me that the
tech must have been waiting with that guitar, and maybe with starting
blocks from a track meet, he was that fast.
OK one more. our seats were just behind the front of the stage
around the side of the arena. As they begin Xanadu, a wall of light erupts
from the front of the stage: multicolored stage lights pointing straight
up. With all the smoke they created a wall of light at the front of the
stage. From our angle, we were looking out onto the main floor; must be
what the Boys see when they play. Amazing.

Subject: Re: Alex Solo
Hey fellow RushnutS!
Some folks out there have expressed concern that Big Al's solo project
might in some way jeopardize the beauty we call RUSH. Well, I just
finished reading the RUSH book that was posted as a few issues of NMS
a little while back, and the last page has some heartening news:
Lerxt said he was interested in doing some solo work.
Since this book was written around 1982, it means Alex has been
itching to do some soloing for over a decade. And in those 10+ years,
RUSH has not suffered. So it seems safe to feel that his solo work is
something that he's wanted for a while and not any harbinger of doom
for the band.
And thanks to whoever posted the BMG number for "Burning for Buddy".
I just signed up with them and needed a selection :-)
